If you're not familiar with the concept of usability, a book on the
subject in the VUW library is
Nielsen's "Usability Engineering" .
Nielsen's web site also has useful material.
There are two general ways of assessing usability. "Usability Testing" does involve test users, and "Usability Inspection" does not. Generally, testing is regarded as more dependable, but more expensive, and some people suggest it makes sense to do inspection as a first cut, to eliminate obvious problems, followed by testing later on. Methods for usability inspection are surveyed in Mack and Nielsen's book "Usability Inspection Methods" .
I will add other references here if people prod me.
