Victoria Object Group: About the Staff

Brief Biographies:

Dr Robert Biddle is Associate Professor of Computer Science at Victoria University of Wellington. He has BMath (Hons) and MMath degrees from the University of Waterloo in Canada, and a PhD from the University of Canterbury. His primary research is in Software Engineering, especially involving the Object-Oriented Paradigm. He is the author of numerous publications in this area, and has been on the programme committees of many conferences. He is also the organiser of a series of international workshops on OO design at Oopsla, the ACM conference on OO systems, languages, and applications. He has been given a Victoria University of Wellington Award for Special Academic Achievement recognising his teaching, and is a Fellow of the New Zealand Computer Society.

Dr James Noble is New Zealand's leading expert on Design Patterns for Object-Oriented Software, recently having returned home to lecture at the Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. In Sydney from 1997 to 1999 he worked on Object-Oriented Design at the Microsoft Research Institute at Macquarie University. During this time he established the Sydney Patterns Group, the first patterns group in the Southern Hemisphere, and co-organised the Sydney Object-Orientation Special Interest Group. James has consulted, taught courses, presented tutorials, workshops and research papers on object-oriented and usage-centered design in Europe, Australia, and North America. James' second book, "Small Memory Software", written with Charles Weir, describing design patterns for memory-constrained object-oriented systems was to be published by Addison-Wesley in 2000. James holds a doctoral degree, memberships in the ACM and IEEE Computer Society, and is a certified practitioner in Usage Centered Design.
