As a couple of examples, we'd like to develop systems that could provide automatic bogussing for NWP models, and distinguish meteorologically significant cloud such as 'dynamic' and 'convective'. One of our intentions is to train a system to not only recognise individual cloud types, but to go through the hierarchy of meteorological objects to include conceptual models and processes. To begin, I've done a review/survey of numerous classical and AI, super- and unsupervised techniques; this is currently being written as an FR Division technical report. I've also written a noddy Perceptron cloud mask to get my fingers dirty which, rather surprisingly (?), seems to work quite well. The plan is to run a pilot study over the next few months to investigate some of these techniques (particularly Multilayer Perceptrons and Kohonen nets), and put together a basic system which will perform cloud classification, image segmentation and CM identification. Please fell free to contact me for more, or to let me know of any similar work in this area! My background is in astronomical imaging systems (most recently XUV), so I'm still at the relatively steep end of the learning curve.
