I am a new subscriber to MET-AI, and this message is to introduce myself to the rest of the subscribers, following the suggestions of the list owner, though I must stress that I am a very beginner in the AI fields, my joining to MET-AI been a way to know more about the techniques and their meteorological applications. I have been using multivariate statistical tools (Principal Components and Multiple Regression Analysis) since my Ph.D. thesis, in 1986, but last year I become interested in neural networks as a way to account for non-linear dependencies between variables. Name: Jose Antonio Guijarro. Organization: Centro Meteorologico de Baleares (Instituto Nacional de Meteorologia, Spain). Interests: Statistical applications to Meteorology and Climatology. Projects/systems: Name: Statistical tools for local operational forecasts. People involved: J.A.Guijarro and J.Gonzalez (meteorology). Description: Gathering information from our rawindsond station for the last decade, we have begun by deriving a Multiple Regression model to forecast extreme temperatures in several sites of the Balearic Islands. The forecasting is performed through application of the model to the independent variable values forecasted by the ECMWF for our location (Perfect Prog scheme). Next steps will involve extension of the model to forecasting other variables (rainfall amounts and probability, thunderstorms and associated severe wether, etc) and trying AI tools to improve the models. Name: Climatological Atlas of the Balearic Islands. People involved: J.A.Guijarro (meteorology). Description: Developping statistical models for automated mapping of several climatic elements. The models used so far are again regression models between the climatic variables and physiographic predictors such as altitude, slopes in different directions, distance to the sea, etc. More physically based predictors will be tried in the future, and AI tools may prove also very useful.
