Official Statistics: An Enduring National Resource

The Ministers of Finance, Statistics and State Services commissioned a review of the official statistics system. The report produced by the review team was submitted in December 2003 and cabinet accepted the recommendations in February 2004. The review identified a number of concerns and developed a model for enhancing the official statistical system.

The paper will outline how it is envisioned that the new arrangements for managing the statistical system will operate and outline some of the thinking that underpinned the design of these mechanisms.

In particular the paper will identify some of the opportunities for the research community that will emerge once the implementation of the review’s conclusions are more advanced.
