The New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings is the largest and most complex data collection undertaken by Statistics New Zealand. As well, the many and varied users and uses of the Census data also need to be considered when planning and developing a Census.

A successful Census requires the application of statistical theory and methodology in a variety of ways. An overview will be given of some statistical aspects of the Census 2006 planning and development, including testing and imputation.
