Review of the Mathematics Curriculum in NZ Schools

A brief overview of the background leading up to the Curriculum Project, which will look at the key recommendations that came out of the Curriculum Stocktake report. This will include consideration of key competencies and how these might influence the development of the mathematics curriculum.

A summary of the issues that are being considered by the mathematics reference group will be presented including the proposed new name of the learning area, a draft essence statement, and some current thinking on the strands within the mathematics curriculum and the place of statistics.

Opportunity for input of teachers and other professionals into the curriculum review will be described. The impact of other initiatives such as the numeracy, asTTLe, and the Secondary Futures projects will be examined and a timeline presented for the rest of the curriculum project.
