The operation of many organizations in New Zealand increasingly depends on computer systems. Consequently, it is important to protect such systems, particularly from deliberate attack. However security is a complex problem and requires a good understanding of the issues involved. In this paper, we present a framework for the security of computer systems. We discuss a number of familiar and not so familiar issues in computer security in the context of our framework. Our goal is to provide system administrators with a systematic approach to evaluating the security of their computer systems.
