In this paper we address the study of programming as the use of programming language, and outline how such study might be undertaken. We believe that actual programming practice needs to be studied more and in new ways. We do not suggest venerating any existing practice, but rather exposing it for further study. We believe this approach should be desirable to support in industry practice, and provide a sound basis for academic study and research
