Entry Requirements for 100-level Mathematics and Statistics Courses

Entry levels

At present there are three levels of entry to Mathematics and Statistics courses at Victoria University. For further advice on entry to Mathematics or Statistics courses, contact the School Office.

Advanced and gifted students

Advanced and gifted students may be granted direct entry to 200-level courses; in this case they do not gain credit for the courses they have skipped but they have an opportunity to take a wider selection of more advanced courses. Entry is at the discretion of the appropriate programme director.

Reasonably well prepared students

Reasonably well prepared students, who have gained NCEA credits set out below, are given entry to MATH 142, MATH 151, MATH 161 and/or STAT 131.

Course Requirements
MATH 142 18 credits of NCEA Level 3 Calculus, or its equivalent, preferably with some Merit or Excellence. Alternatively, students can take MATH 141 first
MATH 141 16 credits of NCEA Level 3 mathematics, or MATH 132
MATH 151 16 credits of NCEA Level 3 mathematics, or MATH 132
MATH 161 16 credits of NCEA Level 3 mathematics, or MATH 132
STAT 131 16 credits of NCEA Level 3 mathematics credits, including 12 credits from the Calculus domain . Alternatively, students can take MATH 141 first.

Less well prepared students

All students are given entry to STAT 193 and MATH 132.

HELP Although less well prepared students are given entry to STAT 193 and MATH 132, if the mathematical background is extremely weak then a lot of work may be required - students prepared to put in this work are given enough help to allow them to succeed.

Entry under the former Bursary or Sixth Form Certificate System

To enrol in MATH 142 under the former system, you should have at least
  • a B in Bursary Mathematics with Calculus (BMC), or
  • an A in Bursary Mathematics with Statistics (BMS), or
  • a grade of 1 or 2 in Sixth Form Certificate (6FC). Otherwise you should first enrol in (and pass) MATH 141, or MATH 132

To enrol in MATH 151 or MATH 161 under the former system, you should have at least

  • 55% in BMC, or
  • 60% in BMS, or
  • a 1 or 2 in 6FC. Otherwise you should first enrol in (and pass) MATH 132.

Entry Requirements For PHYS 114 AND PHYS 115 (required for Electronic and Computer Systems Engineering and ELCO major)

To gain entry to PHYS 114 and PHYS 115, students should have at least 14 credits of NCEA Level 3 Calculus, or MATH 141 and at least 14 credits of NCEA Level 3 Physics, or PHYS 130. PHYS 115 also requires a pass in PHYS 114 or a B+ (or better) in PHYS 130.

If you have done exceptionally well in your NCEA units you may be offered direct entry to Stage 2 courses. You need to talk to Dr Gillian Turner, Physics Programme Director, tel 463 6478; gillian.turner@vuw.ac.nz.
