8.45 Registration

9.00 Introductory Session
This session provides an introduction to KAREN and to global advanced networks. We explore what e-research is and take a look at some international examples of e-research projects.

10.30 Morning coffee

11.00-12.30 Collaboration Workshop
E-research is really about collaboration amongst researchers, particularly from different organisations. In this session participants work in groups to describe how they currently collaborate, and then spend time exploring how they would like to collaborate in future.

12.30 Lunch

13.15 Tools
This session gives an overview of relevant technologies, including specific examples of ready-to-use collaboration tools.

14.45 Afternoon Tea

15.15 Capability Building
This session covers national activites to build capability for e-research, including information about the KAREN Capability Build Fund.

15.45 Conclusion
Where to from here? An open discussion about future activities, including exploring opportunities for each organisation to make use of KAREN, the nature of the tools required, any capability that needs to be developed and any perceived barriers to realizing the identified opportunities.

About the presenters

John Hine is Professor of Computer Science and Head of the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science at Victoria University of Wellington. He has worked with the development of the Internet in New Zealand and elsewhere since 1983. Current relevant responsibilities include leadership of e-research development at VUW and chairing the KAREN Capability Build Advisory Panel.

Sam Searle is the E-Research Development Coordinator at Victoria University of Wellington. She works with academic and support staff to foster an e-research culture and maximise use of New Zealand's new Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network (KAREN). Sam is a qualified librarian and previously managed collaborative digital projects at the National Library of New Zealand.

Cost and registration

The cost of this one-day workshop is $30 per person, covering all course materials, lunch, morning and afternoon teas, and drinks.
